Avibase cites 519 bird species in the Santa Cruz Mountains area, aiding the Bay Area's reputation as an international biodiversity hotspot. The bay itself is the largest estuary on the West Coast, and is considered one of North America’s most important. It serves as a critical stopover point along the Pacific Flyway migration route of shorebirds and waterfowl, hosting over a million birds during the migratory season.
